How to Sharpfin your Reciva radio
PLEASE NOTE: the Sharpfin patch ONLY works on v257 series firmware. It DOES NOT WORK on the v265 or v266 series firmwares with which recent Reciva-based radios (esp. from Grace Digital, Avox, Magicbox and recent versions of the DNT IPDIO Tune) are being released. The patch may appear to transfer in some cases, but remains non-functional. Whether this is by design or by accident is not known.
This procedure will provide a non-approved facility for updating or editing the firmware on your radio.
A list of firmware updates is available at
http://www.pschmidt.it/sharpfin/index.php?title=Radios
It is possible to install the beta firmware, but you are advised that some versions are known to have caused severe problems with some radios (eg. Imp Adapt).
Carrying out this operation will invalidate your warranty. As with any low level modification to computer devices, it involves 'flashing' info to memory. Any interruption to this process (eg. a power-cut, switching off) can damage your radio. Proceed with caution!
The following instructions are for use with a Windows PC. To install Sharpfin using a Linux PC the steps are similar but cygwin is not required. See
http://www.pschmidt.it/sharpfin/images/7/7b/PatchingTheRecivaRadio.pdf for fuller details of both methods.
Step 1
The first step is to install Cygwin on your computer.
This is easy to do - just install the basic Cygwin - it takes some time.
Go to this address:
You'll see the install button at the bottom of the page - click this and let the install complete.
Step 2
Download the sharpfin files and unzip to a new directory/folder called Radiopatch
The files you need are at:
http://www.pschmidt.it/sharpfin/index.php?title=Releases
You need these 2 zip files
Windows Patch Server (alpha test version 0.5, 7 Oct 2007)
Sharpfin Base Patchfile (alpha test version 0.3, 12 Jan 2008)
Step 3
Download the instructions from:
http://www.pschmidt.it/sharpfin/images/7/7b/PatchingTheRecivaRadio.pdf
READ THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY!!
Step 4
Before you do anything, as the instructions state, you need to know some IP address information.
If you do ipconfig/all at a C: prompt you will be able to discover:-
IPv4 - your computer's current IP address
Subnet mask - usually 255.255.255.0
Default gateway - probably something like 192.168.0.1
WRITE these numbers down for future reference when you install the Sharpfin files.
Step 5
This will be when you actually install the Sharpfin files.
Change the network settings on the radio (as per docs) - Run Sharpfin patchserver on PC (if you have Skype, disable it first) - install the test routine.
This will confirm that the sharpfin process works on your radio.
Step 6
Repeat the sharpfin process but choose the base patch files - this will install the webserver on the radio.
Step 7
You use the webserver on the radio to download a 'suitable' firmware to your PC (the download consists of 2 files).
These two files are what you will finally use to update the firmware on the radio. I would suggest installing 257-a-756-a-030
When you installed the sharpfin patch it will have put a webserver on the radio.
You can access this by typing
http:// radio ip address in your browser (eg.
http://192.168.0.150).
If you don't know the address you could download this program called netscan (
http://www.softperfect.com/download/freeware/netscan.exe ) which will show all the network devices on your network with their ip addresses.
When you have the radio webpage on screen, on the left are menu choices one of which is Change Firmware.
Click on this and you see a page where you type in the firmware version (eg. 257-a-756-a-030 ) - and click Find patch.
You will see 2 files listed - right click and save BOTH to download folder. Best to copy them to the same folder where you have the other sharpfin files.
To install the firmware - you need to rerun the sharpfin patchserver but this time specifying the firmware as the patchfile.
Reset the radio as before (Auto DHCP Off and new ip addresses) - then do the Firmware update.
This will start the update. IT CAN TAKE QUITE SOME TIME (5 to 10 mins) - DO NOT SWITCH OFF OR UNPLUG.
If it's successful then the radio will restart with the new firmware.
You can then set Auto DHCP back to ON.
